Quietly nestled at the base of Jetty hill, overlooking the train station, stand The Boatsheds. This multi-residential development, completed in the 90’s, retains its classic and contemporary appeal.

Reminiscent of a dockyard form, The Boatsheds is designed as a series of five gabled units, stepping down as they overlook the Jetty watercourse.

Ocean views, privacy and light are paramount in the design intent of this project. The stepped form of each Boatshed volume promotes privacy on all balconies while maintaining a fantastic view of the ocean throughout. An inverted internal layout, combined with penetrating light voids in the central three units, ensure a sense of light and airiness even within the most internal living spaces in the complex. Each unit boasts a private courtyard, and a unique treatment in its approach to the lane access.

Materials detailing the interiors of each unit continue the maritime aesthetic. Recycled timber floors are featured throughout each residence. Kitchens showcase perforated metal panels, timber, and stainless-steel finishing. Unique open-tread stair treatments incorporate a tensioned stainless-steel wire void adjacent to the balustrading, maximising light and air while endowing a sense of security to the occupant.

Important in the staging of this build was the sensitive removal and relocation of the original Station Master’s Cottage which had previously occupied the site. With effort, an established Norfolk Island Pine was retained during works and still compliments the development to this day.

Three decades on The Boatsheds have retained their value as light, private, comfortable units, which maximise their access to ocean views. They hold an enduring classic appeal in a style befitting their coastal location.
